Psychosocial Intervention in post earthquakes setting in Nepal

Nepal Government recorded that 7.8 magnitude earthquakes killed more than 7,500 people(as of May 5, 2015), 18,000 people injured and more than 200,000 houses were fully or partially damaged. Nepal government estimates that the number would go up as the rescue and relief efforts are still going on. Facing and witnessing this mega-earthquake, people are stressed, feared and confused. Psychological and social impacts of this disaster may underminethe long-term well-being of affected populations.

In this post-emergency situation, it becomes an urgent need to address the psychological distress and trauma. Centre for Victims of Torture (CVICT Nepal), in collaboration with UN Agencies and International Humanitarian Organization, has been providing Psychological First Aid (PFA) and Psychosocial Counselling services in earthquake affected districts including displacement camps.

The objective of this intervention is to: 1) improve emotional, mental and social well-being of earthquake survivors 2) enhance reliance and empower individuals to tackle emotional reactions to critical events 3) manage stress and its related disorders to prevent development of more severe mental health problems 4) support families and groups by activating support networks 5) increase mental health awareness, mitigate stress and restore social and cultural constructs in communities 6) ensure provision of Mental Health and Psycho-social Services (MHPSS) to address more severe mental problems.
